I’m always surfing around YouTube for videos on diet and nutrition. I came across a guy with the most annoying voice called Dr. Greg. Not only could I not stand his super high-pitched voice, but he also doesn’t talk in his videos — he screams!
I kept clicking out of his videos, but for some reason I would always come back. Then, much to my dismay, I started binge-watching his videos, and eventually I got used to his voice until the point that it didn’t bother me anymore.
So what is so interesting about this guy that kept me coming back again and again? The anabolic diet by Greg Doucette! The “Anabolic Diet” is about consuming low-calorie-dense foods. He is also known for his famous “Anabolic French Toast”!
I personally love French toast! It’s my favorite breakfast meal, so I was super excited when I found Dr. Greg’s recipe, which is packed with protein and more filling!
His whole ideology is that if at the end of the day you are in a calorie deficit, eventually you will lose weight. I personally agree 100% with this!
People make losing weight complicated, and jump around from one diet to another. I know because I have personally been there. But all you need to know to lose weight is this: calories in, calories out.
There are several other YouTubers that have adopted Dr. Greg’s diet. They come up with new recipes all the time. One which I have been following lately is Remington James. He has recipes for almost anything you can think of, from quesadillas to pizza, all relatively low-calorie.
This sounds revolutionary!
“How are they able to achieve making delicious food so low-calorie?”, you may be asking.
The answer is you go for all the sugar-free, fat-free, lowest calorie option at the grocery store. That doesn’t sound so bad, right? This is actually where Dr. Greg, Remington James, and I clash.
The problem is that the lowest-calorie option is not always the healthiest option. A lot of those problems are full of pesticides, chemicals, sodium, preservatives, and fake crap.
Remington James even recently said in one of his videos that he doesn’t care about eating vegetables! He drinks 3-4 diet sodas every day, and eats cheese like there is no tomorrow.
The truth is that you don’t have to eat healthy to lose weight.
In fact, a lot of healthy foods are packed with calories, for example: avocados and nuts.
A professor at Kansas State University ate Twinkies for 10 weeks and lost 27 pounds. Click Here to learn more about the Twinkie Diet.
This then posts a struggle. Do we eat unhealthy low-calorie food and lost-weight, or do we eat healthy food and carry a few extra pounds?
After much thought, my answer is this: we should still strive to eat healthily. And although it might not be as easy to lose weight by always choosing the low-calorie (less healthy) foods, you can definitely eat healthily and lose weight too. You have to find a balance.
Remember that eating healthy will extend your lifespan, and increase your metabolism and immunity.
So what are some tips to eat healthy and lose-weight too:
- You will just have to eat less. You can still eat your nuts, but eat less of them so that at the end of the day you are in calorie deficit.
- Exercise more. Burn off the extra calories from the healthy food you are eating.
- Stick to low calorie healthy foods. For example: berries, eggs whites (instead of the whole egg), and spinach.
I know my tips are not sexy, but the truth is that there is no magic pill to losing weight and being healthy.
Keep in mind that when you reach your desired weight goal, it will become easier as you won’t have to be in a caloric deficit anymore, and your body will have gotten used to not eating as much.
So if you still want to try the anabolic diet by Greg Doucette to lose weight, give it a go, but remember to make the healthier choice, and not just choose what is the lowest-calorie food.
Below is the recipe for Dr. Greg’s Anabolic French Toast, and in parentheses are my modifications. Even though my changes might add a few more calories, I think they are worth it in order to stay healthy.
1 cup egg whites (I buy pastured raised or organic egg whites)
4 slices regular ass white bread (I use Dave’s Killer bread)
1 packet sweetener (I don’t add this)
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tbsp vanilla extract
0.5 cup blueberries
0.5 cup low calorie syrup (I use not more than 0.25 of maple syrup)
Cooking spray (I use either avocado, coconut, or extra virgin olive oil)
1. In a bowl, add egg whites, cinnamon, and vanilla extract. Whisk until evenly distributed spices throughout the mixture.
2. Heat a griddle over low-medium heat. Spray griddle with cooking spray.
3. Dip bread slices into egg white mixture, and transfer to pan.
4. Spoon any leftover egg white mixture into the bread in the pan. If done slowly, the bread should absorb the mixture and get fluffy.
5. Let cook for about 3–4 minutes on each side.
6. Remove French toast from the pan and serve on a plate with blueberries and maple syrup.

I still enjoy watching Dr. Greg’s and Remington’s YouTube videos for low-calorie cooking ideas, however, I change the recipes a little to include more vegetables, more organic options, and plant-based foods.
Remember, it’s all about balance!
