vegan-sugar-2

If you read food labels, you’ll notice how sugar has taken over almost every food  item today. Even in food without packaging and labels, like food you buy at at restaurants, food booths, and even bakeshops! Sneaky sugar is everywhere!

For us vegans, sugar, in its general name, can be so cryptic. You may easily think it’s vegan since it’s mostly from sugar cane, right? Well not really.

Sugar is one of the most controversial food items in the vegan world. So, unless you can confirm it’s a vegan-friendly sugar, you will have to drop it!

Keep reading to find which are the vegan sugar brands available in the market today.

The Sugar Controversy

In most cases, sugar on foods is only labeled as that: sugar. It may look simple, but that actually makes it complex for us vegans. Why? Because there’s so much more that goes beyond its production which particularly concerns the vegan community.

Sugar is commonly made from sugar cane. The problem is, most sugars today undergo so much refining, which requires several filtration methods. Of all these methods, the most popular is the one that uses bone char to whiten sugar. This, of course, leaves traces of animal products in the end-product.

Sugar In Labels

What makes sugar in food labels cryptic is the absolute lack of details in it. When it says “refined sugar”, I just avoid it and run for the hills. So, it’s best if the food or brand comes with a “vegan-friendly” label.

When it comes to buying sugar, “Vegan” labels are not common in sugar brands today although many of them are actually vegan-friendly. Mostly, sugar types are only according to their color and source.

So for me, the easiest way is to just find brands that I can trust and stick to them. Today, I will make it even easier for you. I’m giving you the list, right here, of vegan-friendly sugar brands! So take your pick and enjoy!

  • Beet sugar
  • Coconut sugar
  • Demerara
  • Evaporated/dehydrated (cane juice)
  • Muscovado
  • Organic
  • Raw

Refined Sugar In Disguise

Since bone char refines and bleaches sugar, you’d think all other sugars are fine as long as they are not white. Well I used to think that to. Until I found out how lots of manufacturers just add some molasses on refined white sugar to make them look brown!

This is because refined sugar is much cheaper than specialty sugars, since they are more available by bulk. By being a premium product, real unrefined sugar can demand higher prices whereas refined white sugar cannot.

So, when choosing brown sugar, you have to make sure it’s not a refined white sugar in disguise. Check everything on the label, and if it doesn’t say anything about being unrefined, then it’s better not to trust it. There are lots of other brands that label their sugar properly.

Conclusion

Sugar in labels will remain cryptic, so it’s important to know how to identify and find vegan sugar. The good thing is you don’t have to take chances now that there are so many options.

Ultimately, it will pay to remember which varieties are vegan, and to be able to find brands to stick with. So bookmark this article so that you can always come back to it!
