When we were younger, we probably heard adults tell us how important it is for us to consume dairy. However, what we didn’t know is that one of the most consumed dairy products – cheese is actually dangerous.

Cheese is actually laden with fat, cholesterol and calories which can contribute to weight gain and other health concerns such as arthritis and blood pressure.

Released in 2013, this book is a collaborative effort between husband and wife – Dr. John A. McDougall and Mary McDougall. In fact, over the years, Dr. McDougall has co-authored several books with his wife, Mary.

Apart from being a physician, Dr. McDougall is also an author. He believes that degenerative diseases can be prevented and can be treated through a low-fat, whole food, vegan/plant-based diet. 

Whenever we hear “carbs”, we automatically grow in fear of gaining weight. When we hear about foods that are heavy in starch, we cower and panic, thinking that they they contribute to weight gain.

It’s been over 23 years since this book came out (circa 1995) but it still remains one of the go-to references for whole foods plant-based diet! 

This book is one of the earlier collabs of Dr. John A. McDougall and his wife, Mary. Dr. McDougall is the same guy who wrote The Starch Solution which I mentioned above.

As a starter, if you think it’s impossible to lose weight while eating as much as you want, then that’s where you are wrong! With the “McDougall Program for Maximum Weight Loss”, this can become a reality!

In this book, Dr. McDougall talks about medical and scientific pieces of evidence that support his simple weight loss plan. Apart from this, the doctor’s wife, Mary contributed to over 100 healthy recipes that you can try at home!

When you first get into the book, the dedication surely jumps out! The quote says “To those who suffer needlessly in order to look great.”

Once you start going through the content of the book, Dr. McDougall emphasizes that the program is not the “do or die” type of thing. 

Is states that while it would obviously benefit you if you stick to the program’s advice, most especially when it comes to losing weight, you can’t expect results overnight. It’s part of a process that can take some time. 

Dr. McDougall also talks about giving ourselves credit every single time we make healthy choices. And in the event we have temporary failures, we should treat it as part of our learning curve or experience.

The author has also mentioned the effects that consuming coffee and alcohol can have on our overall health, particularly weight. To add, there is also a mention on the role that insulin has when it comes to obesity.

Two clashing ideas come to play – the desire to appreciate your body and make it beautiful is one of the most natural and wonderful urges in life” and “even more fundamental is the urge to eat, which, after all, keeps us alive.”

Giving up on either of these contrasting ideas are not in the cards. As a matter of fact, it’s finding a middle ground that does not impede on either is what Dr. McDougall aims at with his book.

“As if!” is probably one of the most iconic movie lines from the 90s. This very memorable line was delivered by Cher played by actress Alicia Silverstone in the movie Clueless.

The book also sheds lights on issues concerning nutrition that many people face when they first transition to a plant-based diet.

When you make a major dietary change, it’s not something that you can get used to overnight. It involves a process. This is what Alicia emphasizes in the book. 

Those who adopt life-changing and lifelong dietary habits such as being vegans, have different sets of progress. The book discusses three (3) separate levels.

The first level is what is referred to as “Flirting”. In this stage, “flirts” are slowly being introduced to the idea of becoming vegan by eating less meat and preferring to eat more plant-based alternatives.

Kathy Freston is a New York Times best-selling author of vegan books. She has written several vegan-centric books including The Lean: A Revolutionary (and Simple!) 30-Day Plan for Healthy, Lasting Weight Loss which was named as one of VegNews’ “Top 12 Vegan Books of 2012.”

When someone tries dieting, there is so much hard work involved in order to get favorable results. And for some, no matter how much they lose, the weight they lost comes back. 

As frustrating as this can be, there is still hope! And it’s all in the hands of Kathy Freston.

Losing weight should not be something that you should suffer from. As a matter of fact, it is doable and it can last.

In her 2012 release, she introduces us to the life-changing concept called The Lean. This revolutionary idea is all about positive change through a 30-day plan that focuses on transforming your health and weight through easy and practical ways.

The process you have to go through is referred to as “leaning in”’. It involves setting up health and weight goals. When you decide to work on these goals, you can do it by motivating yourself even if it seems like a daunting thing to do.

It’s also about being able to choose delectable foods that can fulfill your needs and support the goals you have set for yourself.

When you take on the 30-day vegan Lean plan, each day allows you to carry out some diet and lifestyle change, that in the course of time will give you the important results that you are looking for.

If you have ever come across the website or YouTube channel, then you might have seen this name floating around – Dr. Michael Greger. 

He is also a nutrition expert, a physician, and the author of the book How Not to Die: Discover the Foods Scientifically Proven to Prevent and Reverse Disease, which was published in December 2015.

The book is all about revolutionary scientific evidence that supports a diet that claims to prevent and reverse the causes of deaths related to diseases.

In his book, Dr. Greger looks into fifteen of the top causes of premature death in the United States. These include the following diseases:

  • Different types of cancers
  • Heart disease
  • Hypertension
  • Parkinson’s
  • Diabetes

Dr. Greger also explains how in lieu of surgical and pharmaceutical options, lifestyle and nutritional approaches are your life’s best bets.

When you take a look at the statistics, 1.6 million American lives are lost due to the fifteen leading causes of death. And while doctors can help treat acute illnesses, they don’t necessarily prevent chronic diseases.

With the help of Dr. Greger, you don’t have to suffer due to these diseases at all!

With his approach (and this is supported by scientific evidence), you will be able to know which foods you should be eating, and which life-changing actions you should be embracing to make sure you prolong your life.

When people hear the name “Jillian Michaels”, they would automatically remember her from the show, The Biggest Loser. But truth be told, there is so much more to Jillian that meets the eye.

Apart from being a TV personality, she is a personal trainer, a businesswoman and also author! One of the books she has penned is ‘Master Your Metabolism’ which was published in 2009.

Before you crucify me, yes, I know that Jillian Michaels is not vegan. However I have not been able to find another book that explains how our metabolism works in just an easy way to understand.

Mastering our metabolism is much more than just our diet. The environment, skin products, etc. also affects how efficient our metabolism will work. Therefore, I think it is crucial that you read this book, even if you have to skip all the non-vegan talk.

For the book, Jillian Michaels worked with metabolism experts. 

One of the things that we can learn from the book is that our metabolism has something to do with the endocrine system. She also explains the three-phase plan, which involves the body’s weight-loss hormones. These hormones are labeled “friendly” and it includes:

  • Testosterone
  • DHEA
  • HGH

She has also included the ones deemed to be “unfriendly” to the body including:

  • Cortisol
  • Insulin
  • Excess Estrogen

Once you start reading ‘Master Your Metabolism’, you will find out three main points that can be summed up into:

  • Removing “anti-nutrients” from your diet
  • Restoring foods that can affect fat-burning genes
  • Rebalancing hormones and energy to help with weight loss efforts

As you go along, you will discover how Jillian has packed her book with vital information that you need to know. This includes guides and lists for shopping, charts for hormone-trier food and much more.

She has added how we can eat foods that are dubbed “power nutrient” without breaking the bank. She has also incorporated recipes (FYI – most are not vegan so I would ignore this section of the book).

There are also mini-programs that address hormone-related problems that women of different ages go through, such as the following:

  • PMS
  • PCOS
  • Andropause
  • Menopause
  • Metabolic Syndrome

The book provides insight that allows readers to understand how endocrinology works. 

Also, this book definitely goes beyond weight loss. As tips on how to control our hormones are added, there are other health and body conditions that are addressed or talked about.

If you are looking for something that can help bring balance back into your body, this is one book you should pick up. 

I understand that some people have a negative perception of Jillian, and that might stop them from picking up this book. However, leave your impression at the door and open the pages of this book with an open mind. You will be surprised by the knowledge that Jillian provides.
