Here’s another book from plant-based diet promoter Dr. Neal Barnard MD. Released in February of 2017, this book dives into the shocking details that surround cheese.
Dr. Barnard talks about the dangers of being addicted to cheese and how it can harm your health. In this book, he also focuses on a revolutionary program that centers on how to lose weight and how to feel great.
When we were younger, we probably heard adults tell us how important it is for us to consume dairy. However, what we didn’t know is that one of the most consumed dairy products – cheese is actually dangerous.
Cheese is actually laden with fat, cholesterol and calories which can contribute to weight gain and other health concerns such as arthritis and blood pressure.
Another notable information about cheese that is emphasized in the book is that it has addictive qualities. It has milk opiates which can trigger the same brain receptors that drugs like morphine and heroin stimulate.
In ‘The Cheese Trap’, Dr. Barnard gives readers a rundown of a weight loss program diet program that helps people free themselves from the cusp of their cheese addiction, leading them to lose weight, gain energy and improve different aspects of their health.
The comprehensive yet easy to follow program that Dr. Barnard has included in this book contains various healthy recipes that can help get rid of any cheese centered cravings you may have.
Apart from the dietary related topics mentioned in the book, it is important to point out that it also discusses the harmful effects the dairy industry has on the environment.
The book also discloses how the dairy industry has lobbied and influenced government policies.
Readers who gave the book five stars have noted how much they liked how easy it was to understand and how straightforward the approach is.
They also noted how Dr. Barnard was able to arrange the order of topics and information brilliantly. It made it easier for people to grasp and to be interested in what he was trying to convey.
As the gist of the book is all about the dangers and ill effects of cheese consumption, Dr. Barnard makes it easier for people to follow through with eliminating the said dairy product from their diet. This is through actions plans that he has included in the book.

In addition, it also covers topics such as animal cruelty and factory farming, as well as things to avoid like:

If you are looking for a weight loss book that sugarcoats the truth, then this book is not for you! However, if you are cool with a few expletives and the hard truths, you might find the book full of information and motivation.

In the book, the authors have admitted that the title was all part of their marketing plans. However, readers must remember that beyond the eye-catching title, this book is ultimately about awareness and health.

Released in 2013, this book is a collaborative effort between husband and wife – Dr. John A. McDougall and Mary McDougall. In fact, over the years, Dr. McDougall has co-authored several books with his wife, Mary.
Apart from being a physician, Dr. McDougall is also an author. He believes that degenerative diseases can be prevented and can be treated through a low-fat, whole food, vegan/plant-based diet.

Well, it’s time to say goodbye to these notions! Because ‘The Starch Solution’ is here!

It’s been over 23 years since this book came out (circa 1995) but it still remains one of the go-to references for whole foods plant-based diet!
This book is one of the earlier collabs of Dr. John A. McDougall and his wife, Mary. Dr. McDougall is the same guy who wrote The Starch Solution which I mentioned above.
As a starter, if you think it’s impossible to lose weight while eating as much as you want, then that’s where you are wrong! With the “McDougall Program for Maximum Weight Loss”, this can become a reality!
In this book, Dr. McDougall talks about medical and scientific pieces of evidence that support his simple weight loss plan. Apart from this, the doctor’s wife, Mary contributed to over 100 healthy recipes that you can try at home!
When you first get into the book, the dedication surely jumps out! The quote says “To those who suffer needlessly in order to look great.”
Once you start going through the content of the book, Dr. McDougall emphasizes that the program is not the “do or die” type of thing.
Is states that while it would obviously benefit you if you stick to the program’s advice, most especially when it comes to losing weight, you can’t expect results overnight. It’s part of a process that can take some time.
Dr. McDougall also talks about giving ourselves credit every single time we make healthy choices. And in the event we have temporary failures, we should treat it as part of our learning curve or experience.
The author has also mentioned the effects that consuming coffee and alcohol can have on our overall health, particularly weight. To add, there is also a mention on the role that insulin has when it comes to obesity.
Two clashing ideas come to play – the desire to appreciate your body and make it beautiful is one of the most natural and wonderful urges in life” and “even more fundamental is the urge to eat, which, after all, keeps us alive.”
Giving up on either of these contrasting ideas are not in the cards. As a matter of fact, it’s finding a middle ground that does not impede on either is what Dr. McDougall aims at with his book.
For those who have had the opportunity to read the book, they have noted that Dr. McDougall continually emphasizes how the fat we eat is the fat that we wear!
6. The Kind Diet - Alicia Silverstone
“As if!” is probably one of the most iconic movie lines from the 90s. This very memorable line was delivered by Cher played by actress Alicia Silverstone in the movie Clueless.
Over a decade after her breakout role, Alicia Silverstone has also embraced another character. Apart from being an actress, a model, activist, and conservationist, she has also become an author.
In 2009, she published a book called The Kind Diet. This book can be considered as a vegan’s nutrition guide.
In the book, Alicia imparts her encouraging thoughts about giving up meat and dairy permanently from her life. She also summarizes the amazing benefits that you can get from following a plant-based diet. These benefits include:
- Weight loss
- Great energy
- Healthy digestion
- Clear skin
Alicia touches on the negative effects of foods that are deemed to be nutritious on the body. These include fish, meat, cheese, and milk.
Some people think that adhering to veganism, and of living a dairy and meat free life, would mean that we are depriving ourselves. However, Alicia thinks it is the exact opposite!
In The Kind Diet, Alicia has included different kinds of delectable recipes that can keep you satiated every meal.
The book also sheds lights on issues concerning nutrition that many people face when they first transition to a plant-based diet.
When you make a major dietary change, it’s not something that you can get used to overnight. It involves a process. This is what Alicia emphasizes in the book.
Those who adopt life-changing and lifelong dietary habits such as being vegans, have different sets of progress. The book discusses three (3) separate levels.
The first level is what is referred to as “Flirting”. In this stage, “flirts” are slowly being introduced to the idea of becoming vegan by eating less meat and preferring to eat more plant-based alternatives.
For someone who has just started transitioning to the vegan life, you will see small beneficial changes in your body.
The next stage in the process is when you can now identify yourself as a vegan. This is when you are able to get a taste of the amazing benefits that you can get when you live an animal-byproduct free life.
In this stage, even though you have given up eating meat and other animal products, you are still able to enjoy various substitutes such as vegetables, fruits, and grains.
Your final form will happen once you get to the third and last process which is the “Superhero” program.
This involves the holistic and dynamic practices to your diet as well as other aspects of your lifestyle. In this stage, Alicia is able to describe in detail the importance of vegetables, whole grains, and other delectable food choices.
Whatever your intent is in reading the book- whether it’s for wellness, for energy and metabolism, or to help save our planet, the author is able to give readers the necessary information, tools, and inspiration that they need in order to make your vegan journey memorable and beneficial.
As a matter of fact, readers of the book have noted how this book goes beyond a particular diet. It’s basically like a “life diet”.
Some people, before even reading the book, admitted just to being curious because they saw Alicia’s photo and name.
However, once they started reading the book’s content, they realized that Alicia had something important to say and she knew what she was talking about.
This surely contradicts the popular belief that celebrities can’t write or that they don’t really know much about anything else other than being a celebrity!
7. The Lean A Revolutionary (and Simple!) 30-Day Plan for Healthy, Lasting Weight Loss - Kathy Freston
Kathy Freston is a New York Times best-selling author of vegan books. She has written several vegan-centric books including The Lean: A Revolutionary (and Simple!) 30-Day Plan for Healthy, Lasting Weight Loss which was named as one of VegNews’ “Top 12 Vegan Books of 2012.”

Losing weight should not be something that you should suffer from. As a matter of fact, it is doable and it can last.
In her 2012 release, she introduces us to the life-changing concept called The Lean. This revolutionary idea is all about positive change through a 30-day plan that focuses on transforming your health and weight through easy and practical ways.
The process you have to go through is referred to as “leaning in”’. It involves setting up health and weight goals. When you decide to work on these goals, you can do it by motivating yourself even if it seems like a daunting thing to do.
It’s also about being able to choose delectable foods that can fulfill your needs and support the goals you have set for yourself.
When you take on the 30-day vegan Lean plan, each day allows you to carry out some diet and lifestyle change, that in the course of time will give you the important results that you are looking for.
The changes being talked about here can be as uncomplicated such as giving up drinking milk or opting to have protein shakes. These little changes can actually help you make healthier choices.
In Kathy’s book, there are two rules you should always remember. These can be summed up as:
Rule no. 1: Willing to take just one step at a time
Rule no. 2: When adding healthier foods to your diet, start eating the new ones first.
By slowing adding more nutritious foods to your diet, you will be fuller for a longer period and this helps combat your cravings.

9. Master Your Metabolism - Jillian Michaels
When people hear the name “Jillian Michaels”, they would automatically remember her from the show, The Biggest Loser. But truth be told, there is so much more to Jillian that meets the eye.
Apart from being a TV personality, she is a personal trainer, a businesswoman and also author! One of the books she has penned is ‘Master Your Metabolism’ which was published in 2009.
Before you crucify me, yes, I know that Jillian Michaels is not vegan. However I have not been able to find another book that explains how our metabolism works in just an easy way to understand.
Mastering our metabolism is much more than just our diet. The environment, skin products, etc. also affects how efficient our metabolism will work. Therefore, I think it is crucial that you read this book, even if you have to skip all the non-vegan talk.
For the book, Jillian Michaels worked with metabolism experts.
One of the things that we can learn from the book is that our metabolism has something to do with the endocrine system. She also explains the three-phase plan, which involves the body’s weight-loss hormones. These hormones are labeled “friendly” and it includes:
She has also included the ones deemed to be “unfriendly” to the body including:
- Excess Estrogen
Once you start reading ‘Master Your Metabolism’, you will find out three main points that can be summed up into:
- Removing “anti-nutrients” from your diet
- Restoring foods that can affect fat-burning genes
- Rebalancing hormones and energy to help with weight loss efforts
As you go along, you will discover how Jillian has packed her book with vital information that you need to know. This includes guides and lists for shopping, charts for hormone-trier food and much more.
She has added how we can eat foods that are dubbed “power nutrient” without breaking the bank. She has also incorporated recipes (FYI – most are not vegan so I would ignore this section of the book).
There are also mini-programs that address hormone-related problems that women of different ages go through, such as the following:
- Metabolic Syndrome
The book provides insight that allows readers to understand how endocrinology works.
Also, this book definitely goes beyond weight loss. As tips on how to control our hormones are added, there are other health and body conditions that are addressed or talked about.
If you are looking for something that can help bring balance back into your body, this is one book you should pick up.
I understand that some people have a negative perception of Jillian, and that might stop them from picking up this book. However, leave your impression at the door and open the pages of this book with an open mind. You will be surprised by the knowledge that Jillian provides.
BONUS: To learn more about what your fellow vegans are saying about some of these books, check out the video below!
Losing weight is a battle that might sound impossible to win on paper but is actually pretty achievable. If you are looking for guides that can help you achieve your ideal weight and body, check out the vegan weight loss books that I have included.
All the books on my list have some things in common. They are not only for those who are already vegans but also for those just starting out. Also, they advocate a plant-based/vegan diet.
With all the important information and details they have, the authors try their best to present their plant-based diet programs to readers without putting a lot of pressure on them.
In order to achieve the favorable results that we are after, we need to remember that losing weight is not a race at all.
If you are following a three-week long program or something more long term, the most important thing is that you are comfortable with what you are doing. That way it will become a habit.
